I hate reality TV, it’s NOT real. It’s scripted, edited and casted. “American Idol”, “Survivor”, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”, “The Bachelor”… OMFG WHY ARE THEY ON TV AT ALL?!?!?!?!
I hate drama, but I seem to be in the minority. Don’t get me wrong, I like dramaS, movies and shows that are dramatic. I just hate drama, in life and on TV. When my daughter comes home talking about how so and so said this and he and she said that, I roll my eyes and start planning dinner or make a shopping list in my head. People still watch this crap.
That being said, I have watched a few shows. I got into “The New Gilligan’s Island” when it started, and watched the whole season. “Who Dunnit” was another one that I enjoyed, though that one had more thinking than the average reality TV show. And then there are the shows I don’t see as reality TV because they are so good, but they are.
“Bar Rescue” is great. John Taffer, who ever he is, has run lots of bars and made lots of money and now has a TV show where he tells failing bars what they should do to, well, stop failing.
“Kitchen Nightmares” is great. Gordon Ramsey, the guy with a dozen other realities shows based on cooking, is a world class chef and makes lots of money and is telling failing business owners how to, well, not fail.
Tonight, because there are no new episodes of “Bar Rescue” to watch, I am watching “Kitchen Nightmares”. The shows are pretty much the same. Go to location, see how things are, give suggestions, owner(s) don’t want to change, they change in the end, everything ends well (We started off yelling at eachother, but now I consider youa friend). Sometimes they update us at the end how the owner didn’t like the changes and went back to losing thousands a month, or even closed the doors. Sometimes they let us know profits are up. And sometimes nothing really changed.
This episode has Ramsey eating food and complaining how it is no good, and the owner says to the camera "He doesn't like it? What does he know? I'm not changing it!" Idiots! He is a world class chef with his own TV show, she is a failing business owner. Why do these people dislike change so much?!?
I suppose they look at it as personal. If their food sucks, they must suck, and they don’t think they suck. It’s like someone who has a mental disorder, say depression; if you tell them they need medication because something is wrong with them, they get upset because you are telling them something is wrong with them. You are trying to help, letting them know that they feel different than how most humans feel but they take it personally and perhaps that stops them from getting help. These jerks on TV do the same thing, they take it personal when really someone is trying to help them and they should take the advice!
It’s also funny that THEY called for help. They sent a letter or made a phone call stating they are failing and want someone to help them. Okay, you want help but don’t want to change. Good luck!
So, yeah, reality TV kind of sucks… except for the shows I watch. I think I will go back to Jeopardy, that’s the best ‘reality’ tv show out there.
And “Naked and Afraid”. I can’t forget that awesome program.
