One of the classes I am taking this semester is a required one for graduating, it's called "Aspects of Physical Fitness". It seems to be a very easy class so far, but it is only one credit so I assumed it wouldn't be too time consuming.
Though it is easier than my other classes it is very interesting and I want to take something from it rather than just going through the motions and passing the class. I am only on chapter 3 but there is some very good information so far.
Chapter 2 talked about setting goals and changing behavior, and that's what I want to write about here.
There are stages of change: Precontemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action and Maintenance.
Precontemplation is like thinking "I don't want to change." It's where a person is at before they think about changing, though perhaps knowing that change is an option.
Contemplation is thinking about change, knowing it is something you can do and thinking about doing it.
Preparation would be getting ready for change, you've decided to to it and you are preparing for it.
Action is as self explanatory as the rest, actually doing it and making changes.
Last is maintenance, you have made changes and now you just need to keep it up. I think eventually maintenance would end and you now have your lifestyle how you wanted to change it to. you develop good habits and once they become second nature you don't need to be aware of them, you just do them.
Before change can happen you need to look at a few other things, like am I able to change and is it worth it?
I like to think I am able to change anything I want, my mind is my only obstacle. It may be seen as different things, like needing self-confidence or motivation, but it's all up to your brain. Some things are not just you knowing you can do it, like do I have access to what I need to change or do I enjoy what I am doing to change. I may even need more knowledge in order to make a change, depending on what it is.
Another thing that helps is reinforcing factors. If I am successful I will want to continue, or if I have support of my friends and family I may have an easier time with the changes.
There is a lot more to the class, and I want to write more, but I will save it for a future post. I hope by spelling things out here it will help me make the changes I want to in my life. it might also help me get a better grade in the class, so that'd be nice too.
